Workshop 01 / Painting

Let colour lead.

You do not need a subject to start a painting. In this gentle colour exercise, you will build a small abstract composition by following the shapes and combinations that catch your eye.

Cobalt blue arch, pale yellow circle and coral shapes on a soft green ground

Find your three colours

Choose one colour you love, one that feels different, and one quiet neutral. Mix a small light and dark version of each. Try them on a scrap before you begin.

Make the first big shape

Use your medium brush to paint a shape that takes up about a third of the page. It can be a loose circle, an arch or an irregular patch. Leave some paper visible.

Build a conversation

Add a second shape in a different colour. Let it touch, overlap or sit far from the first. Pause after each mark and look at the spaces between your shapes.

Add one small surprise

Use your smallest brush to add a line, a dot or a contrasting patch. Stop while you still feel curious. Let the work dry according to your paint’s instructions.
