Workshop 03 / Drawing

Look a little closer.

A cup, a leaf, a folded cloth: you already have a subject. This short drawing session is about looking with attention and letting your hand respond, without worrying about a perfect likeness.

Let’s begin
A continuous dark green contour drawing of an abstract face with a coral circle

Choose something ordinary

Place your object where you can see its whole outline. Notice the tallest point, the widest part and the empty spaces around it. Give yourself a minute just to look.

Draw one slow outline

Keep your eyes on the object as much as possible. Let the line travel around its edges. Try one version without lifting your pen or using an eraser.

Find three kinds of marks

Add a few light lines, a few darker ones and one patch of repeated marks. Use them to suggest a shadow or a surface. Leave some areas completely open.

Make a second version

Turn the object or move your chair. Draw it again, this time a little faster. Put the drawings side by side and notice one thing you enjoy in each.
